I’ve been keeping track of my book process in my sketchbook and here on medium.

Sketches presented in class on Thurs, March 11

March 11 class notes

Maggie: Use less grid…be more organic

be playful! use different styles in different sections, different type treatments per page

look at rookie yearbook!

combine artifact & digital graphics

the front could be type-based and Annie appears on back cover

use a collage-y inspiration?

Draft presented in class on March 16

March 16 Notes

Play with scale more!!!

Can make body type smaller

Move away from typewriter-y font

NOW DUE MARCH 30

Work on cover, look at peers

specify color scheme!!!

Add other essential parts, page numbers

Add in more collage-y photos? Neutral ones like nature, woods, things that make sense contextually

More negative space, “less” essay text

MONOTONY

scale and hierarchy (use different systems of hierarchy, use different sizes)

Seeing that same layout more than two times is boring!

Worried abt grid, too wide, text too big

Change to 6 column?

Contents is really nice!

Start messing around with ones you like the least first…

Draft presented in class on March 18

March 18 notes

At least three quotations by or about your hero treated as “pull quotes”

Meet with Brett on Saturday!!!

Credit page

Check other peoples inside covers

March 21

I met with Brett at 9:30 to get some more feedback on my booklet.

March 23 notes

Change cover to just portrait?

Print before next class

Scan tape — can insert like collage

Scan stars?

Fix quote page?

Decide upon captions

double check all requirements!

March 25 notes

Bring stapler to studio!

Print on tabloid oversize and trim after stapled together

Quote spread: spacing makes it awkward to read? Repeating motif from table of contents is good though!

Don’t crop out little bit of picture from last page..let creep over to next page

Don’t crumple book cover and mendls box?

Items pop! Against the background! Good contrast

Jaclyn: really like how artifacts are treated, maybe tilted too much on last page. Really likes quote: “awesome” be careful where spreads meet the center line — trapped space in GBH spread — can u see the white on the GBH spread? Is the circular type on last too much?

Likes cover! Add color? Likes tiny type

Hannah: likes cover, but lower stroke weight to match — agrees with jaclyn about round type: make it be like “other films” and make pics on that spread more “regular” — quote type feels heavy — line spacing! Make it wider — thinks spacing on quote pg is okay…could leave more room before forgery — maybe re-arrange contents letters

Strong nice aesthetic , carries through

Catherine: “I think bc the graphic design is forgery is a really interesting and ‘innovative’ quote, I think parts of its meaning can get lost if it’s spread that far apart. I may need to read multiple times to understand it”

Edit folio?

Reach out over the weekend! Sunday at 10–10:30

Color is nailed — more color on the cover! Bring red or green onto front cover

Andrew loves contents composition — contrast on type — bolder body text: fudge it…

Fix body rag on contents, ALL orphans, too wide

Handwrite and scan!

Underline film titles or quotes

Final Book Layout! March 30, 2021

Digital Experience

March 11

I’ve started planning out my wireframe and sitemap to try and figure out the general idea of what my experience is going to look like.

March 16

I’m thinking that I’ll want my mobile experience to really mirror most design elements of my booklet, and have animation that feels sorta choppy, maybe like stop-motion animation?

Andrew said don’t go too crazy with the animations, doesn't seem fitting for Annie’s style.

March 30

I didn’t work on the mobile experience as much as I would’ve liked to while I was grinding out stuff for the booklet, so now I’m ready to get started trying to finish it to the best of my ability for the final.

April 1

I feel like I got a good bit of work done over the past couple of days, and the structure is at a point where it’s functioning, so that's pretty exciting at least. I’d like to try and apply more design to it over the weekend though. I’ve got the timeline working pretty well though, with animations that I really like.

April 6

Looking back, I think I really still need to spend more time on this project, since there are bits that I would really like to have in a more polished state than they are now. Not really sure when I’ll find time to do that, but I’ll do what I can to try and not have to rush it all at the end of the semester.

(notes on soft final)

  • Could use Annie’s head as a hamburger menu
  • move the arrows down in the gallery to give the pictures more space?
  • replace the ‘continue’ screen with something else
